Takapuna, 10 July 2024 – As someone who has always bought lottery tickets to support Coastguard's lifesaving work, this year’s Cash Windfall Lottery winner *Sue* from Takapuna, was in for a big surprise. The $100,000 prize was a dream come true, far beyond what she ever expected.
Sue has been a Coastguard supporter for many years. Her connection began in the early 2000s when she took several boating courses, including the Boatmaster and the Maritime VHF Operator’s Certificate course. In 2010 Sue and her husband were out on their yacht in Australia and needed a tow from the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard. “Without the help from those volunteers, we wouldn’t have made it home safely,” Sue recalls.
This experience made a big impact on Sue and her husband, and when they returned to New Zealand, they decided to start supporting Coastguard here. Although they no longer own a yacht, Sue still enjoys her time on the water on a kayak or in their dinghy.
With her winnings, Sue has paid off a small overdraft, generously shared funds with her children and grandchildren, and made donations to other causes she cares about. She’s also excited to use part of the money for a special trip to Australia this year.
Acknowledging the challenging work of Coastguard volunteers, Sue expressed, “Although we’ve only needed help from Coastguard once, we know many people rely on them if things go wrong on the water. Buying lottery tickets is our way of giving back to these wonderful people in our community.”
Sue’s story is a reminder of how a small act of support, like buying lottery tickets or donating, can make a big difference. Who knows? Your next ticket might bring you a wonderful surprise too!
