Coastguard Maraetai Inc operates out of Maraetai Beach and services the Auckland Inshore area which is the Hauraki Gulf and Firth of Thames, but more specifically easterly from a line from Pine Harbour to Rocky Bay and Waiheke Island, encompassing Ponui Island and the Firth of Thames, along the eastern shore of Waiheke Island to the Coromandel Peninsula.
After a plane crash off Duders Beach in 1975, Sea Rescue unit was set up and manned by members of the Maraetai Beach Boating Club, using a 16 foot runabout. In 1982 this vessel won an award from Auckland Volunteer Coastguard for the most rescues in the Auckland area.
