No health challenges can stop Kayla’s 22km swim for Coastguard

Whangaparaoa, 22 July 2024 – Thousands of Kiwis across the country are diving in this month to raise funds for Coastguard. Among them is Whangaparaoa's Kayla Hyland, who, despite her health challenges, has swum 22km to support the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to keeping Kiwis safe on the water.  

Born profoundly deaf, Kayla underwent life-changing surgery at the age of two to receive cochlear implants, which opened a new world of sound for her. Despite facing other health problems, including surgeries to straighten her knees and a spinal rod placement, Kayla has always been a fighter. 

Kayla’s swimming journey began under the guidance of Olympic gold medalist Dean Kent at Northern Arena. In a small group of disabled children, she mastered her swimming techniques and found a therapeutic connection with water.  

Linda, Kayla's proud mother and biggest cheerleader, is very happy to see her daughter take on the challenge with such enthusiasm. "Swimming is more than just a sport for Kayla. It had helped her overcome her physical challenges and made her feel more confident about herself," Linda shares.  

Inspired by her family's lifelong commitment as Coastguard members, Kayla saw The Big Swim as a perfect opportunity to support a cause that has been a part of her life for so long, while doing something she truly enjoys. 

“Kayla has grown up knowing Coastguard for the incredible work they do on the water. I am so proud that she sees value in the cause and understands her responsibility to give back to the community," says Linda. "Her 'never give up' attitude has inspired many to donate. She has already crossed her initial fundraising target of $2,000 and will continue to raise more as she completes her swim.” 

The Big Swim is halfway through, with more than 1,200 enthusiastic swimmers having already covered over 7,600km—about half the length of New Zealand’s coastline. The funds raised will help train and equip our 2,000+ volunteers and maintain 106 rescue vessels across 63 units.
