What you need on your boat

So you’ve got the boat, but what do you need on it?

We use an acronym that is PASSBF to teach what 6 essential items you should carry at a minimum:

  • P

Personal Floatation Device/Lifejacket. One for every person on board and the right fit also.

  • A

Anchor (including chain and rope). This to use in an emergency.

  • S

Secondary propulsion. Whether it is paddles or auxiliary engine.

  • S

Signalling equipment. A means to signal others when the worst happens- VHF radio, mobile phone, emergency beacon(s), horns, flares, torch, whistle. There are tons of ways to signal others.

  • B

Bailer. We need to keep water out to be stable and not sink.

  • F

Fire extinguisher. To put out fires onboard.

There are plenty of opinions out there, but here is the Coastguard approved list of what you should have on your vessel when you head out.

Coastguard recommends Marine Deals for all your boating, fishing and marine gear - they have a huge range of all the best kit at great prices.
