In January 1976 Ōpōtiki Sea Rescue Organisation was born after a tragedy at sea. In 1986 the organisation became Ōpōtiki Marine Search and Rescue and about the same time joined the New Zealand Coastguard Federation (now Royal New Zealand Coastguard Inc).
